Helmut Joseph is a freelance photographer who specializes in figurative photography. His work is hallmarked by his clean, bold, and graphic style.

Making a bold statement is a major goal of every image Helmut creates. He travels extensively to perfect his craft and is consistently honing his style. Part of the his time is spent at his renovated 12th century fortress, aptly named La Fortezza, in Tuscany. In this place he enjoys artistic inspiration and beautiful Tuscan light. He and his wife host photography and styling workshops and retreats at La Fortezza from June until October. Their home is located in the countryside north of Florence.

Helmut was born to German parents in New York City. Much of Helmut’s early life was spent living in Europe with his family. In fact, his first camera was bought by his uncle, also named Helmut, on a trip to Berlin. Ironically, Berlin was also the birth place of his major influence, Helmut Newton.

Many of his early memories are photographing while he traveled, capturing people and places all over Europe. As Helmut matured, his love of the human figure and fashion began to develop. You can see these early influences in his work today.

Helmut Newton expressed through photography the idea that women’s sexuality could give them power. The women he portrays are independent and in command. He encourages the viewer to question the sexual objectification of women by forcing them to confront their own voyeuristic gaze. My goal ultimately is to create a beautiful image that is artful and at times provocative and a bit daring.
